Local residents are asking why when they ask for more compostable Green Bags for their food waste, Trafford’s Labour Council are failing to deliver the bags, and local Conservatives are asking for answers.
Trafford Council has provided homes with a year’s supply of compostable food bags, and additional bags have been able to be requested, either from the crews with a yellow tag on the bins, by calling for new ones, or picking up from the local libraries. Dozens of local residents have however been reporting that they have run out of supplies of the food bags and have been unable to obtain replacement bags from the council.
Cllr. Dave Morgan, Shadow Executive Member for Environmental Services said “Trafford residents have always done their bit to help the planet and done an excellent job; we know that 58% of the food waste produced at home in Trafford is recycled. The Labour Council however are now putting obstacles in the way, and failing to supply homes with compostable bags.
“Many residents have been in contact with their local councillors to ask what they are meant to do with their food waste as local libraries don’t have any replacement bags and have been ignored when they have been putting a yellow tag on the bin on collection day, or phone up requesting new ones. The situation has been made worse by an erratic green bin collection service over the summer months meaning that some residents have rotting food waste in uncollected green bins.
“We know that in the 2021/22 council budget that it was Labour’s intention to cease providing an unlimited supply of the compostable food bags for food waste. Residents were rightly angry about that, and Labour u-turned on such policies. It’s time for them to sort this out, and get green bags delivered to residents, and available at libraries to pick up.
”This latest example of Labour’s mismanagement of the waste service is also borne out through the latest England recycling league table which shows that Trafford’s overall performance in the table has seen a drop from 9th in 2016/17 under the Conservatives to 25th in 2019/20 under Labour. Labour really are letting standards slip in Trafford.”
