Cllr Nathan Evans: Time to Act on Unauthorised Tents and UnFairness in Housing

Residents across Trafford are increasingly concerned by the appearance of tents and rough sleeping encampments at Sale Waterside, following the departure of individuals from the Cresta Court Hotel. As Leader of the Trafford Conservative Group, I share those concerns and believe urgent action is needed to restore fairness, uphold the law, and rebuild public confidence.

This is not about lacking compassion. It is about ensuring fairness for all—especially for local families who may have waited years on the housing list, paid their way, and contributed to the community, only to see others apparently bypass the rules and occupy public spaces without consequence.

There are legal tools available to the Council and the police. However, after raising this issue with both Greater Manchester Police and the Labour-run Council, their response has been disappointing. They appear either unwilling or incapable of exploring these tools, preferring instead to accept the status quo. Conversations with both authorities have failed to yield any commitment beyond “managing the situation.” This is unacceptable to many residents and unfair to our taxpayers and local businesses alike.

We understand that Trafford Council’s Homeless Action Team is currently assisting in sourcing more permanent accommodation. While support for those in genuine need is important, this approach may be diverting resources away from actual Trafford residents and placing an additional burden on local taxpayers.

The Trafford Conservative Group is calling for immediate action:

  1. A full review of unauthorised encampments and rough sleeping across Trafford.
  2. Exploration of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) in sensitive locations such as Sale Waterside.
  3. Clear communication to residents on how housing is allocated and what rights exist for local taxpayers.
  4. Closer coordination with Greater Manchester Police to enforce existing laws.

We also urge the Council to work with support services and charities to ensure that those in genuine need receive appropriate help. But support must go hand in hand with enforcement. If street camping is to be tolerated, the Council should explore creating designated, council-controlled sites where appropriate.

We are proud of Trafford and its strong sense of community. But that pride is undermined when the Council refuses to act in the interests of the many, while tolerating disorder from the few. Local people deserve better. They deserve a Council that listens, that acts, and that puts fairness first.
