26/07/10 - Labour's Legacy of Irresponsible Spending Hits Trafford

Trafford received notification from the Department of Education that, as a result of the legacy of Labour’s commitment to capital schemes that were putting the country further and further into debt, the department is obliged to identify savings to tackle the budget deficit from a number of capital budgets in 2010–11 and that the Playbuilder capital grant is one of the budgets that has been affected.

Playbuilder projects that are not at contractual stage and therefore will not go ahead are: Seymour Park; Victoria Park; Abbotsfield Park; Davyhulme Park; Humphrey Park; Kelsall St Park; Stokoe Playing Fields; Gorse Hill Park.

Playbuilder projects that are at contractual stage and that the Council is hopeful will go ahead are: Lostock Park; Flixton Park; Walton Park; Hornbeam Park; Ashton Park.

Councillor Christine Turner, Executive member Supporting Children and Families, said ‘I want the residents of Trafford to know that this situation is all down to Labour’s mismanagement of the country’s finances and is not something that I ever wanted to see happening to this borough. We will be working hard to ensure that the contracted schemes go ahead and whether it is possible to salvage any of the uncontracted priority schemes’

The DfE have stated that they will assess current liabilities by the end of August 2010, and that they will then inform the local authority of the reduced allocation.
