26/01/10 - Alex Williams slams Labour's attempts to block sports led regeneration of Stretford and Old Trafford

Alex Williams, Conservative Prospective MP for Stretford and Urmston and Deputy Leader of Trafford Council has this week slammed Labour's attempts to derail the regeneration of Stretford and Old Trafford. Conservative proposals would ensure tens of millions of pounds of private sector investment to ensure that Test match cricket remains, the provision of enhanced sports facilities for our young people and a new supermarket which many residents are demanding.
Speaking in response to Labour's motion to the full Council meeting on Wednesday, Alex said:
"While Labour Councillors did little to invest in Stretford and Old Trafford when they controlled the Council, our plans offer a unique chance to obtain a massive £21m private sector investment at minimal cost to the taxpayer.''"I have received many messages of support for our proposals from residents, including those in Stretford. The Gorse Hill Community Action Group have submitted a petition signed by hundreds of residents supporting a new foodstore.''"The benefits from the LCCC proposals stretch far further than to the club itself. These proposals will keep the Northwest as a provider of world class cricket, bring in and guarantee 500 jobs over many years, assist removing people off the list of the long term unemployed, deliver £6m of income into Trafford at every major Test match, provide economic support to companies supplying LCCC and strengthen the tourism offer of Trafford.''"The Academy's links with LCCC will ensure a strong sporting ethos between the two organisations with the expansion of the cricket school, linked to the Academy. This will benefit hundreds of young people in Stretford and beyond. The scheme also gives us the opportunity to significantly improve the offer within Gorse Hill Park.''"It is clear that Labour are desperate to block our proposals. They are happy to see cricket leave the Borough, remove employment opportunities for local residents and destroy enhanced sporting opportunities for our young people. What a narrow minded outlook they have - how they can claim to speak on behalf of the people of Stretford and Old Trafford is beyond belief."
